Carpet Flooring

Are you looking for the perfect carpet?

When you walk into a carpet store, there is so much to see. Be it samples from the mills and manufacturers or an assortment of colors, styles, and textures; you have many choices. You don't have to be an expert in carpeting to make a decision, but you do need a basic understanding of carpets to get started.

What are your requirements?

To get the floor covering that best matches your home, you need first to assess your requirements for the carpet. What room will it be installed in? Is it a sunny or dark room? Large or small? Is it a busy room? What do you use the space for? Do you need extra durability? Or do you need stain resistance? What is the décor of your home? How big is your budget? Focus on these questions first.

Research

Research carpets. Five primary fibers are commonly selected: wool, nylon, polyester, triexta, and olefin. You want to research the characteristics of both natural fibers and synthetic ones. Ultimately, it will come down to how much you value specific features of each fiber. Study the construction styles, such as high/low pile, cut pile, looped, cut and looped, frieze, Berber, shag, Saxony, plush, and patterned.

Quality

Look at the density of the carpet. This means how closely the fibers are tufted. A density value of 3,000 or more is the best for your home, but you can check it yourself. Bend back a sample card; if you see a lot of white space, ask the flooring expert why. The twist number, from one to five, is another reliable determinant for quality. This tells you how many times the fiber is turned per inch. The higher the number means a more durable carpet and less of a chance of unraveling. This number should be somewhere between three and five.
